I Want To Go To Harvard Graduate School, Am I A Competitive Applicant?
I just took the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) & received a scaled score of 411. I would like to get my Master’s in Education at Harvard, but couldn’t find their minimum MAT scores. I think I’m in the high 70th or 80th percentile with that score in my fields (music/education).
I graduated from Boston University with a double major in Education & Classical piano performance. My college G.P.A was 3.49/4.00 & I was awarded several prestigious awards by BU for my work with arts in education (especially urban education). I’m an African-American woman from a low-income family. Some of my awards/activities include:
The Horatio Alger National Scholarship
The Horatio Alger Alumni Association
The Presser Grant (awarded to only one student in the College of Fine Arts)
The Claflin Academic Grant
The National Youth Leadership Forum Alumni Association
The Boston University Music Grant
Offered a job by the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law & CSI as an advisor(I will be working for them next summer). (This is relevant because I’m interested in education law.)
Boston University Full Tuition Grant
Director of a low-income educational summer camp for students in my city.
Do you think I have a shot?
Is there anything I could do to improve my resume?
Am I Bad With Money Or Is The Cost Of Living Just Too High?
Okay I make 62K a year which is pretty good, right? So why am I always broke? Oh my take-home pay is about 4K/month:
Some of my major expenses are:
Rent: 1000
daycare:440
Tuition for grad school (about $500 per month)
car: 409
Insurance 140
Plus all the utilities, very basic cable, cell phone, groceries, etc. & 2 credit cards with $15 minimum payments each, but I have been paying like $40 each, & a piano payment for $64.
I don’t go crazy with clothes/manicures/hair & stuff like that either, just what we need.
Do you think I should be just making it or should I have extra money in the bank?

Should A University, And Their Advisors, Be More Open To A Student About The Prospects Of Their Majors?
What I mean is that say for example the student is going to go into a major like Music Appreciation – Piano (of which I knew someone who graduated with such a degree), & this is going to be a major that’s going to take at least 4 years to complete with a tuition bill of like $30,000+, only to have the student face a very limiting career that may only pay a small salary. Shouldn’t the school, & its advisors, be ethically responsible to mention these probable career facts to the student up front so that this knowledge doesn’t just suddenly hit the student when they graduate?
And not just this major but any other major that may seem impractical & more difficult to find jobs in.
And for the record that friend of mine is still having a tough time right now finding a job with her degree, & is thinking about going back to school for nursing. Hence the reason for this inquiry. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Any Tips For My Career Path I’m Choosing?
Hey all I’m 19 years old & in my 3rd semester at my local community college. I’m half way through my associates in liberal arts & my GPA will be above a 3.5 when I graduate. I’ve been in many clubs & became an officer for one of them. Also I gained a $1,000 scholarship for tuition there. This is all to make up for my poor SAT score that I got when I finished high school.
I plan on going to SUNY Stony Brook. I plan on getting a bachelor’s in respiratory therapy. Also I will become certified to become a personal trainer. After I graduate I might become affiliated with the US Air Force for a few years. (I like the atmosphere on air bases. The large open space. I went to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware with my uncle a few years ago. Air bases are awesome!)
From here maybe I’ll either go into a more military career or a strictly health care and/or fitness back up career.
Just wondering if any one out there has some advice or tips on my decision making.
My hobbies:
-playing classical piano (mainly Chopin’s nocturnes)
-motorcycles (Buying my first bike,+gear&insurance, I saved up for next spring. Will be a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R)
-I want to learn how to fly a plan
How Did Juilliard Become Known As The School?
Why does everyone want to go THERE? It’s one thing if they’re looking to work with a certain teacher or conductor or something, but most people are like “oh violin/piano/cello/harp/oboe/etc. I playz it. iz gud & i iz gunna go 2 julie-ard!” without knowing anything about the school, its requirements, the expense of living in NYC, the tuition costs, & the uncertainty of a job after school is over & the loans need to be paid.
It’s a good school, yes, but what about Eastman? NEC? Curtis?? Going overseas to study in Europe? What gives Juilliard its lustre?

Chances Of Getting Into University Of M Twin Cities?
I am a junior in HS. I am wondering what my chances of getting into the U of M are. I am taking 1 AP class this year, & plan on taking 3 next year. otherwise most of my classes i take are hard ones. My gpa is a little higher then 3.5, & i will probably graduated with something around there. I got a 24 on my act. (i have time to take it again & score better) I know these aren’t the greatest grades, but i am active in other things
I am an officer in my DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) chapter & will be president next year. (i hoping this boosts my chances of getting in since i want to go to CSM) I play JV basketball & am very involved in my drama club & ecology club. i already have enough hours for my silver chord. i’m not a minority, both my parents went to a 4 year college, but i do have enough money to pay for college without any help from loans. i am out of state, but from WI (which i know MN & WI teamed up to have a same tuition program to encourage people from both states to go to each other’s school)
i am in french 4 & want to study abroad in france for at least a year in college & i play piano. so i’m well rounded.
what are my chances of getting into the u or m twin cities?

Questions About Dance?
Hi,
I’m trying to decide which dance i should take: ballet or hip hop? I take piano (classically trained, 8th year) so ballet might be a better choice. i’m 12 & most of my friends who do ballet started out @ 3, so is it too late for me?
i also want to get fit…so……
furthermore, what is a good dance school in vancouver that you could recommend? (good tuition fee, area preferably in richmond or ubc area, & good for beginners with no experience at all, professional teachers…)
thanks so much

How Do You Suggest I Organise My Time?
Monday I have school until 2p.m., then I have to go for my Japanese class from 2.30p.m. to 4.30p.m. I only get home at about 5.00p.m.
Tuesday I have school until 2.30p.m., then I have Judo as my extra-curricular activity from 3.00p.m. to 6.00p.m. I stay back in the dojo until about 7.30p.m. for extra training/practice.
Wednesday is pretty much like Monday, but after Japanese class I have to go for piano lessons from 5.00p.m. to 6.00p.m.
Thursdays are the same as Tuesdays, but after Judo, I have Chinese remedial from 7.00p.m. to 9.00p.m.
Fridays I just have school until 2.30p.m., with no extra activities.
Saturdays I have Judo for 2 hours, 10a.m. to 12p.m.
Sundays I have Math tuition from 9.30a.m. to 11.00a.m.
I’m really bad at planning my time, so can anyone suggest where my homework, revision, practice & leisure time should be arranged?
Why Can’t I Do These Things?
I’ve asked my mom to put me in activities….like Club Volleyball, Gymnastics, or piano lessons….but she either tells me no right off the back…or she’ll just ignore me. Then when it comes to my little brother, SHE’S the one asking HIM if he wants to play baseball or t-ball..or whatever little kids are forced to play…I’m always wanting to go to the park & I ask her to play volleyball with me, & she just yells at me or says she’s “tired” or she’s “busy” when, in actuality, she’s watching tv or sleeping….I used to be a lot more active, but now that I can’t do anything…I stay on the computer….AND THEN she gets mad at me & tells me I need to get out more!! *sigh*I mean, If I were put in some activities that I truly love…I wouldn’t be sittin’ around all day…..what do I do? I’ve tried to ask my grandparents to help me pay for tuition to an out of school volleyball team…but ends never meet…and I’m still stuck here…I don’t know what to do.

I Have Been Frauded. What Should I Do Now? Should I Sue Bank Of America?
I am a Duke student, & I have been frauded of close to $3000 recently. So the gist of the story is: I have recently posted on craigslist.com that I am offering piano lessons. Then some guy contacted me via e-mail, saying his daughter needed piano lessons, & offered to send me the tuition fee first. I agreed. Then he sent me 3 checks of $950, asking me to please help him transfer the money to his “flight agent” so that his flight agent can book the ticket for his daughter to come to New York. Initially I was skeptical as well, so I deposited the money into my savings account. But the number went up the next day, so I thought the checks were cleared, & went ahead to help the guy out by sending money to his flight agent cash through Western Union. But then a few days later the Bank put a hold on that transfer because they think the check is fraudulent. I have called Bank of America, & they said that the checks are most likely going to be fake. I just lost $2850.
My question would be: what should I do in this situation other than filing a police report? Because I strongly feel that Bank of America should NOT have given me clearance on the money, if the money was not real. And once the money was in my account, there was no indication that those money were under investigation. So I really feel like Bank of America is partially at fault here.

Family Issues Trying To Convince Dad And More?
How can I convince my dad to give me text?
I tried to ask him nicely & here were my reasons
he told me I dont get out much & hang out like “normal kids” but then he doesnt want me to have text. It’s like he wants me to be social but doesn’t want me to have text?
My reasons for text were:
Helps get to know people better relationships with friends
Is an important tool in a relationship with a girl
It’s the only way to talk to anyone because no one actually calls anymore
It’s only ten bucks a month more & he’s a doctor he should be able to afford it
People told me I need to get texting badly
I want to have fun I don’t want to miss out anymore compared to my friends
I been home for the past 10 years & not really got to hang out with anyone sleep overs, go to the mall etc.
I’ve never been to a summer camp cause he said it was a waste of money
Another reason i didn’t mention to him though was that he sends his mom 3 grand everyother month just so she can buy “vitamins” alcohol.
I just feel like I’ve missed out on too much during the “fun days” of my life & I just want to have a little fun during my High School years.
I’ve always had straight A’s in Honors classes
I never ask for anything & everything I own I get from my mom who has to work & deal with a lot more stress than him. She buys me & my siblings our clothes, tuition for school & our piano lessons. Because my dad says all that is a waste of money.
All my dad does is ***** & complain about money when i saw in his excel spreadsheet of finances he was loaded well in my eyes with about 50 grand when me & bros & my mom are the ones doing all the chores around the house & he says i dont do anything at all to even deserve a phone.
sorry that i just went off ranting a little bit
His reasons
Waste of money because you dont make money texting
Waste of time
“If they were really your friends they would be your friend even if you don’t have texting” but they are my friends they always invite me to their house but my dad doesnt let me go do anything with them
“That’s alot of money” i say in my head your a doctor its only 120 a year
“You have to work for it” i say in my head I already get excellent grades & do chores around the house
I just finally for once in my life just want to have fun & feel like a “normal” kid Me & my brothers & my mom feel like he gives all of his attention to his mom
We don’t even feel like we really are his family some days.
He doesnt know squat about us personally
because of him im kinda skrewd up in the head
because of him my mom is emotionally disturbed
because of him my brothers dont respect him
because of his mom he is like that cheap, selfish, & not a real father figure.
what the saddest part is that I look up to my friends dads they have actually thought me more about life than him
Their the guys who played catch with me at the park while he was on the phone making long distance calls to his mom
I just for once want something
I know that Jesus loves me but I just feel like this is too much
I’m really sorry but I really need some guidance please
