Piano Answers

Is it possible to tune a guitar without the use of some type of reference note (Without having absolute pitch). I want to be able to tune my guitar without having to have any string in tune, without using a piano, tuner, tuning fork, or pitch pipe, or anything like that. Is this possible, & if so how do I do it? Thanks.

Hi, i just started joining the world of piano tech, my father was one & i am following his footsteps, he teaches me the basic of tuning repairing & such, but my tuning isnt that good, one of the problem is that when i turn according to the scoop i can make the pitch of the string neutral but after i hit the piano key for a few time the pitch will lower & lower, i use the hammer to pull the pitch higher again & then repeatedly hitting the piano key & the pitch still will lower… Then i go check the part that my dad tuned & i hit the key more then 20 times but the pitch wont drop my dad says that i need to turn the pin so that it wont move but how am i suppose to make the pin stay still?????

I recently got fruity loops v.8 & i cant seem to figure out how to change the pianos tune i guess u could say
I am trying to find a concert grand type sound but i don’t know if fruity keys can do that
should i be looking for a better download for a piano or should i be messing wit some knobs

Is it possible to start your own piano tuning service? How much should a person charge?

I already play the piano to a pretty high level, but was really interested in learning more about the field of piano tuning etc as hopefully a holiday job…
I would assume that it is impossible to learn from another piano tuner since they would hardly want to create more competition, so an online course seemed like the most likely alternative – or maybe there is a book or better way to go about this?

I am thinking about starting a piano tuning business. I have played the piano for over 11 years now & know all of it’s functions. I was hoping a few of you could elaborate on what the “qualifications” are. Is there a class of certification or recognition I must take & exactly how would I truly learn how to do all the requirements needed for tuning and/or repairing a piano.

a piano tuner hears 3 beats per sec from the combined sound of the piano wire being played & a tuning fork. the wires are tightened & now the tuner hears 5 beats per sec.

My guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E. My piano has two black keys & three black keys with white keys inbetweenst the black.

Yeah, I’m kind of new at guitar
and i wanted to try & play The Best Decpetions from Dashboard Confessional on it.
I have the tabs but it says i have to tune it to open D tuning.
I have a piano so i can tune it like that..
but i was lowering the low E peg to D but its not working..?
am i doing it right?

It depends on if you know what you are doing or if you are just experimenting with tuning. The dangerous part is not if the string snaps because if you are tuning an upright it generally snaps at the point below where you are. What is dangerous is for the piano. There are particular techniques & sequences used for tuning a piano to temperment & if you don’t implement them it could be dangerous for your piano. Each tuning pin must be set & locked in so it won’t slip & If your piano is really out of tune it will need to be adjusted in stages. I would suggest finding a professional tuner to do it.

Usually guitars have their tuning knobs arranged in two rows. Only the tuning knobs on one side would hit three piano keys. The spacing of the knobs would have to line up with the spacing of the keys to even do that.

Most recently when I tune the high treble, usually on older pianos, the B7 & C8 strings break. This especially sucks when i am working on a spinnet. Normally, it’s because the strings are old, but I have trouble hearing when I get the notes in tune & I pull the strings too tight.
What have you all done to help with this in your early careers?
