When Playing The Piano, What Are Some Good Techniques To Force Your Hands To Play Different Melodies?

I am trying to learn how to play the piano, but the problem I am having is that my left hand wants to do what my right hand does. Its hard for me to play chord progressions with my left hand because it wants to play the melody my right hand is playing. How do I overcome this???

when I learned I was always taught to prop up your wrist (as if keeping a bird encaged in between your fingers) & always have good posture.

Practice the tunes bar by bar. The thing with playing the piano, is not in your fingers, it’s in the mind. Train your brain to read the notes for both hands separately. It’s like having a computer with two processors.

Get “HANON The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises” (see link in Sources). It is a piano exercise technique that does just what you’re seeking. Its only $8.95, if you can’t get it online they usually will have it at any major instrumental music store such as Marshall. This is what my piano teacher had me use. I can’t recommend it enough.

The tried & true system is HANON, the Virtuous Pianist. It seems simplistic when you first try it, but pretty soon it starts getting tricky. The trick is to play it over & over & over, because they’re actually like aerobics for your fingers. It guarantees independence of fingers, it says right on the book. Look for it in Amazon or your local B&N.
