I Am Inexperienced With Having Little Free Time, So: Does My Schedule Sound Too Demanding?
I am going to a university as a music major, these are the required classes, so I can’t take less than this.
8 AM – Piano
9 AM – Music Theory
10 AM – History of Music
11 AM – Choir
12 PM – US History
1 PM – Voice lessons
2-4 on Thursdays – Seminar
2-4 on other days – Rehearsal
And I also need a part time job with at least 30 hours per week to be able to afford living (rent, food, etc.) with a $100 a month food budget.
My professors say that I will be practicing 3 hours a night, excluding homework.
From 5-10, if I spend 3 hours practicing, & 2 for homework… When will I ever work?
I don’t demonstrate financial need because my parents make too much (and they refuse to co-sign for anything, or help me in any way because they’re sexist & think females are meant to be housewives) so any loans I get I have to repay immediately (and the max for unsubsidized stafford doesn’t cover tuition at all), but if I have no time to work then I couldn’t afford to pay my loans…
Will I have more time than I think?
I am quite scared.

Oh well, I want to get into M.I.T & I know it is going tobe tough, but I am going to answer your question. Well, if you wake up for college at 7:00 AM, & go to college, then you do your homework & end it at 9:00 PM unless you are fast at doing homework, & then you could get a job at 9:15 & work until 2:00AM & get 5 hours of sleep & you get like 33.25 hours or something like that. So you are absolutely good to go! Good luck, & I hope you become a musician and/or major in music.
PS Do not listen to the others! Go for dream & passion!

If you really have to take all of those courses, & don’t have the option to cut back on a few of those classes for this semester, then I would reexamine your strategy for paying for school/life.
Often, as a student, scholarship provide a much better payout on your time invested than working a part-time job. Have you examined all of your scholarship opportunities. Check with your financial aid office for local scholarship & fastweb.com or zinch.com, http://www.zinch.com/, for national scholarships.
If you can demonstrate serious financial strain due to the schedule, your university may be willing to help with your class schedule. Worth examining.

It might be a good idea to take out a student loan. In your situation, it would make a lot of sense. Think about it – if you’re taking a full schedule of classes that demand a lot of out-of-class work AND you’re working 30 hours a week, you’re going to get burnt out & not do well in either your job or your classes.
Talk to a counselor or adviser, do some research, & try to set up an appointment with a loans officer who can explain the process in more detail.
Another option is to officially declare yourself as an independent, which would free you from your parents & probably get you good financial aid (they help independent students pay their way through school all the time).

No it sounds like you won’t have much time. That schedule sounds very demanding & hard. What you said about when will you work, you’re right… it’s almost impossible to fit that in.
However, I did think of a way it could work, depending on what you’re willing to do. So, you have classes from 8 am- 4 pm, & need to work 30 hours/week, practice 3 hours/day & 2 hours of homework/day. The schedule I came up with is this: Practice at 7 am-8am (I think most college practice rooms are open pretty early.), classes as you already scheduled for times, work 5-9 pm weekdays, 9-11 pm practice 2 hours which adds to 3 per day with the one hour in the morning, then do your homework. You’d have to stay up til like 1 or 2 am & then start again at 7 am, so it fits but would be very hard & a long day. As far as the working, if you do the approximate hours of 5-9 pm or whatever but about 4 hours per day Monday-Friday, that makes 20, & do the other 10 on the weekends, so 5 hours a day on each Saturday & Sunday.
