I Have More Details If My Home A/c Is Blowing But No Cold Air Is Coming Out And The Outside Unit Won’t Run.

I have 2 units & my upstairs blows cold air & that outside unit turns on. The downstairs just blows air & it’s outside unit won’t come on but I can hear a faint humming from it. It happened about the same time I placed a piano infront of the downstairs intake vent for a day but even after removing the piano the a/c still won’t work. WHAT CAN I DO/CHECK BEFORE CALLING A REPAIR MAN?

If the outside unit is not coming on the problem is most likely not freon! A common problem (especially in the south) is ants getting into the contactor & preventing it from energizing the compressor and/or condenser fan. Less common is a wire that has come loose or has burned off. Either problem requires someone who is familiar with electricity & can check it out safely. If you find a problem with the contactor it is best to replace it.

Yes, you need freon. I am in agreement with the other poster.
Here in the USA, it cost about thirty some odd dollars per canister of freon that a service man/woman needs to fill an A/C.
By the way, A/C are not suppose to lose freon. So start saving your money for a new unit for the summer of 2008. However, they are on sale now if you want to look into getting one. Go with a good brand.
Have the service man/woman check your thermostat too to make sure it will match your new A/C.

On the outside unit that is not working properly. Check to see if any air is blowing out of the top of it. If there is air blowing out the top then you know the condenser fan is working. Then the problem is the compressor is not running. It could be a bad contactor, capacitor, or the compressor itself.
If the fan is not running but you hear a humming/buzzing sound then that would be the compressor running. If the fan is not running but the compressor is that is why you have no cool air.
The fan might not be working because of a bad capacitor or the fan motor itself might be bad. Either way this is not an expensive fix.
